Anne Faundez

Anne Faundez spent her childhood in Egypt and teenage years in Australia. She has been in publishing for most of her working life, specialising in fine arts and in education. She was reviews editor of Junior Education and Child Education magazines, and literacy consultant for Scholastic’s educational division for more than ten years. She has written a range of teachers’ notes, worked on various reading schemes for primary school children and published several fiction and non-fiction books for children. The Day the Rains Fell is her first book for Tamarind.

Angela Hassall

Angela Hassall lives in Oxford and Norfolk. She has written four novels for older children including Straw Fire and The Sun People. For many years she taught Creative Writing for Oxford University Department of Continuing Education. Now retired and a grandmother she enjoys singing, sailing and writing for younger children.

Elizabeth Hawkins

Elizabeth Hawkins is a prize winning children’s author. She enjoys writing for both the very young and older children. Formerly a journalist, she began to explore children’s literature and write books for children following the births of her three sons. She also teaches workshops in London on writing for children.



Brought up in the West Midlands, she now divides her life between London and Dorset.

Ken Howard

Ken Howard was educated at University College School, London and Edinburgh University. He trained with Granada TV and for several years in the Drama department of BBC TV. His directing career has spanned drama, documentary and the arts with a particular emphasis on children’s programming. Braveheart and Today I Am a Man both won the Royal Television Society Award for Best Children’s Programme and were followed by You’ve Got A Friend on children’s imaginary friends, Listen to Meabout deaf children and Open Mind dealing with child psychotherapy. Ken wrote and directed the award-winning BBC dramas A Penny For Your Dreams, John Lennon: A Journey in the Life and Sunny Stories on Enid Blyton. He has won and been nominated for many of the most prestigious broadcasting awards, including Emmy and BAFTA.

Ken is also a celebrated composer with over 40 international hits and many million-selling discs to his credit and was the first British writer to write hits for Elvis Presley. West End musicals include The Secret Diary of Adrian Mole, Mardi Gras and Matilda. Numerous TV scores include Miss Marple, The Flame Trees of Thika, Shadowlands and By The Sword Divided.

He devised the board game, Sophie’s World, for his company, Sophisticated Games, which also publishes the million-selling Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit, Beowulf, Ingenious and Golden Compass games. He is a director of Landseer Productions in London.

Karen King

Karen King started her writing career with the teenage magazine, Jackie and spent many years writing for various children’s magazines and a variety of children’s books. She has had over one hundred children’s books published by a range of publishers including Walker, HarperCollins and Scholastic.

She was born in Birmingham, lived in Cornwall for a few years but moved back to the Midlands with her husband, dog and cat. She has four daughters who are now all grown up. She has absolutely no sense of direction and gets lost so often her family are scared to let her out on her own. The things she likes best are eating chocolate and reading, preferably both at the same time.
